History of the Dojo

Sensei Deddy Mansyur began his karate-do training in the 1960’s as a child and later enrolled in a local Shotokan dojo in Jakarta, Indonesia led by Sensei Sabeth Muchsin, Chief Instructor of the Karate-Do Institute of Indonesia (INKAI)

It was during his college years in Tokyo, Japan that Muchsin Sensei first signed up for a Shotokan Karate Class on campus. At that time, his instructor was Sensei Masatoshi Nakayama, Chief Instructor of the Japan Karate Association (JKA). Muchsin Sensei graduated from a college in Tokyo and he moved to Indonesia to establish the JKA of Indonesia, INKAI. The JKA was founded by Master Gichin Funakoshi, the Founder of Shotokan. Nakayama Sensei was one of Master Gichin Funakoshi’s students. For more information on the JKA, go to:

On December 12, 1976, Mansyur Sensei earned his Shodan (First Degree Black Belt) from the INKAI and in the following year September 16, 1977 he moved to Houston, Texas, USA. He enrolled at the University of Houston to pursue his degree in Industrial Distribution Technology and while attending college started the Shotokan Karate-Do Club at the University of Houston. Since that time Mansyur Sensei has continued to maintain the Shotokan Club and has taught countless students the art of karate-do.

In 2003, Mansyur Sensei officially joined the Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation (SKIF), which was founded by Kancho Hirokazu Kanazawain 1977. For more information on the SKIF, go to: http://www.skifworld.com/.


Before joining the SKIF, Mansyur Sensei had the opportunity to train with world-renowned karate masters, including Nakayama, Nishiyama, Enoeda, Okazaki, Takashina, Mikami, Higaonna, Toyoda, Chinen, Yaguchi, Sato, Koyama, Mori, Okamoto, Kagawa, and Kohama.

Currently, Mansyur Sensei is a full-time Shotokan Karate Instructor who teaches his students seven days a week and has stayed active in major karate competitions. He is a life member of the University of Houston Alumni Association.
